A conversation started the other day where the person said they called their boss to tell him their dog had died and he would need a few days off. The guy really loved his dog and was taling the passing of his dog very hard.

He was being genuine and honest when he told his Boss he needed a few days to recompose himself.
I've had pets all my life and am a huge animal lover but I think a few days to grieve for your dog is a little much.

He has the right to ask for personal time but I told him he shouldn't have given the reason that his dog had died.
He said his Boss didn't understand and reluctantly granted the days but now treats him strangely.

I agree with the Boss; a grown man asking for 2-3 days to grieve for a dog makes that person look like they have emotional problems.

I actually can top that one... We had a Staff Sergeant (E-6) give one of her "soldiers" a day off beacuse "she didn't cry today". Yes both were women (not that I am bashing women in uniform in general, just these two in particular).

Wait, she got the day off so she could go cry or as a reward because she made it through the day without crying?

Depends on the person.  Some people don't have a lot of family, so they get very attached to their pets.  When I was first starting out, I lived in an apartment next to some older single people (in different units).  They all had pets and were very attached to them.  I remember this one man talking to me about his old dog that was going to die.  He almost started crying just talking about it.  The dog was all he had.

I, personally, think that honesty is the best policy.  If somebody needs time off, I prefer that they tell me the real reason why.  That way, I know what to expect when they return.  And, if people have the time off to take, it shouldn't matter what their reason is.
