The following is purely a 'What if' scenario but I am intersted in the thoughts of both Christians and non-believers on the following.
If the Christian Right continued to grow in strength and interest in Politics, what if they became a strong underlying force within the America Political ring? Could there ever be a birth to a new 3rd party, the Christian Right?

Would this steer America in a better direction?
Could this ever really happen?
Would you support something like this happening?
If we had a Christian Right President, what would he/she focus on?

I am interested in your thoughts.

You mean they don't?

Not to inflame the topic but did anyone ever see the movie The Handmaids Tail with Robert Duvall?

As Dr. Guy said the book was better. Although, maybe it wasn't the same book that you're referring to. The one I read was called The Handmaid's Tale. From the title, the book you mention seems to be about a servant woman with a vestigial appendage. Sounds much more interesting then the one I read.

OMG! Nice catch.

Well, firstly no one group "rules" America, but I get your gist. As our Legislative branch is currently predominantly conservative, and as the majority of conservatives in this country tend to be Christians, and as we currently have an openly Christian conservative President, I'd say your question pretty much describes the current situation.

This kinda makes me laugh a bit too...

I can just imagine 150 years ago...when Christians gathered and talked about the government...they might have asked themselves..."What will happen if gov and religion are truly separated and the ten commandments can't be posted in court?" ~Gasps!~

Another chimes up, "What if prayer is taken out of school?"

A scream from the back as someone faints.

"What if, what if someday our country allows people to murder babes in the womb?!"

They'd be wide eyed and scared looking for a minute, then all laugh and say "NAH! Never happen!"

You know I must admit they would be pretty abashed.
But that was also back when you pretty had no choice but to be a Christian.

Hmmmm...Levi Strauss, and Lewis Brandeis might want to disagree with you.

I think for the most part the Christian right is way too Augustinian to ever be able to accomplish such a thing. "This world is not our home", remember? If they did the scandals would just start pouring in as this or that televangelist Senator got caught with kiddie porn.

On the whole, though, no, I don't think the nation would suffer so much. Christians for the most part are hypocrites like everyone else, and while they espouse particular ideals they would keep the nation on a fairly even course. Sure, abortion would be gone, and probably a few other things, but on the whole not a lot would change. Most ultra-Christian evangelicals would tell you privately that they wouldn't want their fun messed with.

Don't forget that it basically IS run by the Christian right if you believe what you are being told by those who sit in government now. During election year every Republican in Congress is a bible-thumper, and I think it would be no different once you took the Christian right out from behind their pulpits and gave them the power that corrupts. They'd be wheeling and dealing away their values like Hillary and the rest in no time.
