The following is purely a 'What if' scenario but I am intersted in the thoughts of both Christians and non-believers on the following.
If the Christian Right continued to grow in strength and interest in Politics, what if they became a strong underlying force within the America Political ring? Could there ever be a birth to a new 3rd party, the Christian Right?

Would this steer America in a better direction?
Could this ever really happen?
Would you support something like this happening?
If we had a Christian Right President, what would he/she focus on?

I am interested in your thoughts.

If you mean the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells, I would run screaming to the left, and not look back.

A better direction? Not a chance!
Could this happen? possibly
Would you support it? Absolutely not!
The president? I'd hope the teachings of Jesus.

Col gene and the rest of us would have our arms open if that happened! :;

Let's take them out of the picture and say it happened more at a grass roots level.

No, COl Gene would then be on the right!

As far as Pat and Jerry, that was just a demonstration.  Extreme?  Well, BobJones is worse I guess.

But while some of my views dovetail with some of their, it is readily apparent that I am not their kind of people, and would no longer be able to support their agenda.  I would not become a flaming liberal, but I would not be voting for or supporting their policies either.

The Christian right does not now speak for the conservative side.  And I doubt it has the population to ever control it.  Just remember that Moderateman, and I are both right of center, but would not fit into that part of the right if it ruled.

Well I am a Christian and I am sure I look far right to anyone who is not....so I think the country would be rockin if I ran it!

Would it steer America in a better direction?

Who knows Sushi. It would depend on what the new party believed. I'm sure you know not even Christians always agree on how to handle things.

Could it happen?

Possibly if all the denominations melded into one. (Not holding my breath here)

Would I support it?

Would it matter? I support people and policy I believe are good for the country. There is no way I could say "oh yeah, I'd support everything they did."

Christian Right Prez. Isn't that George Bush?

No matter your faith, running a country involves making decisions. Many past presidents had no qualms about getting on their knees to seek God's guidance for the country. And you are living the benefits of their faith.

The question should be... what would happen if our country was run by a bunch of people who believed this time on earth is all we have and there is no God?

Oh wait....nah!

If that ever happened, I'd be exercising my right to leave the country. It's not that I don't believe, I just think that a country ruled by the Christian Right would be intolerable for me (any my husband) to live in.

We have had one Catholic president, that was JFK, the country prospered.

I do have a problem with this sentence, As A JEW does that make me a non-believer?

Well technically we all believe in something, but I was refering to those who are not of the Christian Faith.
Let me change that to 'Christians and Others'

But aren't there are some basic beliefs that the Christian Right deeply believe in that they would want pushed? I am pretty disconnected with the CR (Christian Right) so I would need some help on that.

Yeah have to agree on this

As much as I feel the same, do you really think it would be that easy? It would probably come on so slowly we would not notice it right away. Realistically most of us that felt that way would have to stay put due to our jobs and families ties. I don't think leaving really would be an option.

Catholic Prez but was the right really in control?

Unless it happens before my husband retires from the military, yes, it IS an option. For us, anyway. I have a British citizenship, and all of my kids are entitled to british citizenship too. I could easily move back to the UK and take them with me. Canada is always an option too.

Mu husband and I have talked about this in the past, and we both have said that we'd leave the country if this happened.

Considering he ran as a moderate (and may have been a liberal), I would say no.

Not to inflame the topic but did anyone ever see the movie The Handmaids Tail with Robert Duvall?

Could there ever be a viable Christian Right Party that would rival the other two?

I think I'll go along with D on this. I am a rightwinger (extreme) "and" a christian. But I don't think even I could handle that!

Saw it. The book was better. And I guess that is why I would never support a religious take over of the us (How about Escape From LA?)
